The most important part of Pokemon Training is probably the training itself. Training is raising your Pokemon specifically for battle, and there are many techniques to tweaking your Pokemon to have the exact stats that you want for your battle strategy.
The most basic way to train Pokemon is simply by leveling the Pokemon up by gaining EXP from any random Pokemon. When the Pokemon levels up, it will get a boost in stats; however there is a maximum level cap of 100 and so strong trainers try to raise their Pokemon in the best possible conditions to ensure the right stats.
Getting the right Pokemon
To start, you should find a Pokemon with the proper nature and characteristic for your strategy. Natures and characteristics give hints about the stat boosts of a Pokemon. Natures boost one stat and decrease another, or do nothing. Characteristics highlight the Pokemon's strongest stat. Every Pokemon has a nature and a characteristic. You can easily check these on the Summary screen.

IVs are the Pokemon equivalent of genes and greatly help to determine the Pokemon's stats. It is difficult to precisely determine what a Pokemon's IVs are, but from Generation 3 onwards there are people in the region who can give you an outline of the stat strengths of your Pokemon. IVs are an advanced mechanic used by powerful and advanced Pokemon trainers, and is usually done by breeding specific Pokemon in the day care to get an egg.
Training the right way
Beginner trainers will often believe that an experience point is an experience point and choose any random opponent to help level up their Pokemon. However, this is not specifically the case. There are things called EVs (effort values) which affect the stat boosts given at level-up. Every Pokemon defeated will give 1, 2, or 3 EVs in certain stats: For example, defeating a Bulbasaur only yields one EV in Sp. Attack, but its final evolution Venasaur yields three: two in Sp. Attack, and one in Sp. Defense. When a Pokemon levels up, every 4 EVs becomes 1 stat point. So, it is important to choose the right Pokemon for yours to battle against if you want the best stat results. A full list of every Pokemon's EV bonus can be found at http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pok%C3%A9mon_by_effort_value_yield
In addition to choosing the right Pokemon to fight, Trainers can also use items called Vitamins to raise certain EVs by 10. They can be purchased for 9,800 Pokemon Dollars in certain locations in each Region.

Iron: Raises Defense EV
Calcium: Raises Special Attack EV
Zinc: Raises Special Defense EV
