Pokemon is a turn-based strategy game with a 2-D over-world, which means that the game is set in a two-dimensional map with different sections (cities, water bodies, etc.) and features a battle screen when necessary. As a Pokemon Trainer, you will get a starter Pokemon (either fire, grass or water type, explained later) to begin your adventure, battle, catch and train wild Pokemon as your partners, and fight other trainers and eventually the gym leaders and Elite Four to become the Pokemon Champion! However, you will definitely need to learn the ropes first, and this site will help you do just that.
The basics of Pokemon battling are fairly easy to learn. Every Pokemon can learn up to four moves that it can use in battle against other Pokemon. Every Pokemon and move has a type (Pokemon can have two) which determine how effective the move will be on the opponent and how much damage it will cause. The goal is to make all of the opponent trainer's Pokemon (up to six can be carried at one time) faint, by draining them of HP (hit points) before all of your Pokemon faint.
When a Pokemon is defeated, every Pokemon that helped will be given EXP (experience) points. When enough EXP points are acquired, the Pokemon will level up, getting stat boosts. If they level up enough, some Pokemon will evolve into different, stronger Pokemon.
